Soil: Tolerates clay, sandy, and rocky soils. Prefers moist but well-drained conditions.
Water needs: None once established. Survives on rainfall alone even through dry summers.
Maintenance: Remove old fronds in early spring if desired for appearance. Otherwise, zero care required.

Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum)

Mature size: 2-3 metres tall, 1.5-2 metres wide
Light: Full sun to partial shade. Flowers best in sun.
Soil: Extremely adaptable. Handles clay, loam, or sandy soil. Tolerates poor drainage.
Water needs: Drought-tolerant once established (after first 1-2 years). No supplemental watering needed in normal years.
Maintenance: Prune after flowering if you want to control size. Otherwise, let it grow naturally.

Its holly-like evergreen leaves provide year-round structure, bright yellow flowers appear in April and May, and dark blue berries follow in late summer — feeding cedar waxwings, robins, and other native birds.

Mature size: 1-2 metres tall, 1-1.5 metres wide (compact varieties available at 60 cm)
Light: Full sun to full shade. One of the few flowering shrubs that blooms reliably in shade.
Soil: Thrives in the acidic, clay-heavy soils common throughout the Lower Mainland. Tolerates dry and rocky conditions.
Water needs: Very drought-tolerant once established. Handles summer dry periods without wilting.
Maintenance: Minimal. Remove suckers if spreading beyond desired area. Prune to shape after flowering.

Oregon grape is deer-resistant — an important consideration in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Port Moody, and Maple Ridge where deer pressure is significant. Use it as a foundation planting, a low hedge, or a woodland understory plant. The compact cultivar 'Compactum' works well in smaller urban gardens.

Salal (Gaultheria shallon)

The Ultimate Low-Maintenance Groundcover

Salal is the backbone of BC's coastal forest understory. This evergreen shrub forms dense, spreading colonies that crowd out weeds, prevent erosion, and look green year-round with absolutely no care. If you have a challenging slope, a dry shade area, or poor soil where nothing else survives, salal will thrive.

Mature size: 30-120 cm in open areas, up to 2-3 metres in shade (where it stretches toward light)
Light: Full shade to full sun. Adapts to virtually any light condition.
Soil: Grows in sand, clay, gravel, and even pure organic duff. Acidic soils preferred (which is most of the Lower Mainland).
Water needs: None once established. Naturally drought-hardy.
Maintenance: Essentially zero. Can be pruned to control spread, but never needs fertilizing, spraying, or watering.

Salal's leathery leaves and delicate pink-white spring flowers give it quiet ornamental value. The dark purple berries are edible (traditionally used by Coast Salish peoples) and provide food for wildlife. Plant it on slopes to prevent erosion, under trees where grass will not grow, or as a groundcover border along pathways. It spreads by underground rhizomes, so give it room or install root barriers in tight spaces.

Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii)

BC's Provincial Tree — A Four-Season Showpiece

Pacific dogwood is BC's provincial tree and one of the most beautiful native specimens for residential gardens. Large white bracts (often mistaken for petals) appear in April and May, creating a dramatic spring display. Leaves turn orange and red in fall. Red berry clusters attract birds. Even in winter, the layered branch structure adds architectural interest to the garden.

Mature size: 6-12 metres tall, 4-6 metres wide (fits most urban lots)
Light: Partial shade to full sun. In nature, it grows as an understory tree at forest edges.
Soil: Well-drained, acidic to neutral. Does not tolerate waterlogged soil. Add organic matter to heavy clay before planting.
Water needs: Moderate in the first 2-3 years. Drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from occasional deep watering in extended dry spells.
Maintenance: Minimal pruning needed. Susceptible to dogwood anthracnose fungus — choose disease-resistant cultivars like 'Eddie's White Wonder' (a hybrid cross) or plant in locations with good air circulation.

Pacific dogwood is a protected species in BC and cannot be harvested from the wild. Purchase nursery-propagated specimens from reputable native plant nurseries. It is an excellent choice as a front yard specimen tree, providing four seasons of interest without the size or mess of a large shade tree.

Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)

Evergreen Mat for Slopes and Rock Gardens

Kinnikinnick is a tough, mat-forming evergreen groundcover that grows naturally on sandy bluffs, rocky outcrops, and dry forest edges throughout coastal BC. Its small, glossy leaves stay green year-round, tiny pink bell flowers appear in spring, and bright red berries persist into winter.

Mature size: 10-15 cm tall, spreading 60-120 cm wide
Light: Full sun to light shade. Best colour and berry production in sun.
Soil: Sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil with excellent drainage. Does not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged conditions — amend clay soils with gravel and sand before planting.
Water needs: Very drought-tolerant. Prefers dry conditions once established.
Maintenance: None. Do not fertilize (it prefers lean soil).

Kinnikinnick is perfect for rock gardens, dry slopes, parking strip plantings, and areas between stepping stones. It handles foot traffic better than most groundcovers and stays low enough that it never needs mowing or trimming. In Richmond and Delta, where sandier soils are more common, it establishes especially well.

How to Combine Natives with Your Existing Garden

You do not need to tear out your entire garden to benefit from native plants. The most successful approach is layered planting — the same structure you see in BC's natural forests:

Canopy layer: Pacific dogwood or existing ornamental trees provide the upper structure and filtered light.
